How a Film About Cuban Rum Turned Into Much, Much More
You can’t waltz into an active military dictatorship even decades after the Cuban Revolution and make a puff piece about Cuban rum. That’s the lesson filmmaker David Freid learned when he arrived in Cuba to shoot a lighthearted film. He had planned to shed light on a potential deal for the island nation to pay off a financial debt owed to the Czech Republic with rum—loads of Cuban rum. But interview subjects backed out at the last minute, and Freid was warned the government might be surveilling him. He could have soured on the project. But the unstoppable Freid switched gears and made “This Film Used to Be About Rum.” Read our interview with the filmmaker: https://ift.tt/3elBrZS SUBSCRIBE: https://goo.gl/vR6Acb #Cuba #Rum #CzechRepublic This story is a part of our Human Condition series.
