Every year 25th December is celebrated as Good Governance Day to mark the birth anniversary of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The aim is to create awareness of accountability in government among the citizens of India. It is the process through which decisions are taken and the processes by which decisions are implemented. On 23 December 2014, the ninety-year-old former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) were announced as recipients of India's highest civilian award for merit, the Bharat Ratna, by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.
