Oceanography is the study of the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the ocean. Ocean relief features refer to the various landforms found on the ocean floor. The continental shelf is the extended perimeter of each continent and associated coastal plain. The deep sea plain, also known as the abyssal plain, is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor. A seamount is a mountain rising from the ocean seafloor that does not reach to the water's surface. Trenches and canyons are both types of ocean relief features. A trench is a long, narrow, and deep depression in the ocean floor, typically caused by the subduction of one tectonic plate under another. The deepest part of the ocean, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, is located in a trench. Canyons, on the other hand, are deep valleys with steep sides, often carved by rivers. Underwater canyons are similar to those on land but are formed by different processes. They are often found cutting into the continental shelf and slope, and are thought to be formed by turbidity currents or underwater landslides.
