The St. Louis St. Paul Sandwich: A MUST Try
Looking for things to eat in Missouri? Start with the St. Paul sandwich, a St. Louis original and one of the most unexpected food spots on Route 66. At Kim Van Restaurant, it’s an egg foo young patty on pillowy white bread with tomatoes, lettuce, and onion. Food critic Jason “J” Lee met up with Eric “Remrod” Mayes, a local icon and the filmmaker behind Half Order, a documentary about Chinese takeout in St. Louis and the Black communities that helped shape it, to find out how the sandwich got its name. The story goes that a man from St. Paul, Minnesota brought it to St. Louis, and it took off from there. After one bite, they agreed: this is the real St. Louis. Proof that some of the best food in America is found at roadside diners and neighborhood spots.
