Kashayapa was one of the “Saptarshi”s and is said to be the father of all living beings. One day, Rishi Kashyapa asked his two wives, Kadru and Vinata, “I want to grant a boon to each of you. Tell me. What is it that you want the most?” At this Kadru smiled and said, “Bless me with a thousand valiant sons, dear Husband.” Vinata thought for a moment and said, “Bless me with only two sons. But they should be stronger than all the sons of Kadru.” “Tathastu”, said Rishi Kashyapa, granting them their boons. In due time, Vinata and Kadru both laid eggs. In their five hundredth year, Kadru’s eggs hatched and emerged a thousand serpents. Amongst them were serpents like Sheshanag, Vasuki and Takshaka. Vinata waited and waited, but her eggs still didn’t show any sign of hatching. Meanwhile, one day when both of them were out for a walk, Vinata spotted Uchchaihshravas, a seven-headed flying horse who was the “vahana” of Lord Indra. She exclaimed, “Look Kadru! Such a beautiful snow-white horse that is!”
