Finding Home After Leaving Prison
At only 18 years old, Jesse Vasquez was sentenced to two life sentences. At 36, his sentence was commuted, and he was given a chance at a fresh start, but not after spending most of his adult life in prison. In need of a place to live, Vasquez reached out to the Homecoming Project, a transitional housing program that matches formerly incarcerated people with homeowners who have space for rent. He was paired with host Candi Thorton and began a new life in a comfortable apartment in Oakland, California. Like a mom to Vasquez, Thornton paved the way for him to feel comfortable in his new community.
