Japan's Snow Monkeys Have Their Own Spa #WorldAnimalDay
For World Animal Day, we're heading to Jigokudani Valley in Japan, where snow buries the landscape for nearly a third of the year, and the local Japanese macaques have figured out the ultimate way to stay warm: natural hot springs. Since the early 1960s, these clever and curious "snow monkeys" have soaked in the valley's hot springs to survive the winter months, living in groups that typically number around 41 (though troops can range from 10 to over 160). Not picky eaters, they forage seeds, plants, and fruit, and won't turn down a handout from a passing tourist. It's a heartwarming reminder that even in the harshest conditions, nature finds a way to relax.
