Texas Eats on Route 66 (Food Guide)
Looking for where to eat on Route 66? This Texas food guide covers the best food spots, roadside diners, and things to eat in the Texas Panhandle, from smoky barbecue brisket to a legendary 72 oz steak. Join us on the ultimate road trip food tour celebrating Route 66’s 100th anniversary! In Shamrock, food critic Jason “J” Lee starts at the Magnolia Gas Station, which opened in 1929, before lunch at the U Drop Inn Cafe, a classic Texas diner stop that first opened in 1936 and reopened in 2021, for a barbecue brisket sandwich, pasta salad with grapes and walnuts, and a root beer float. In Amarillo, artist, storyteller, and Route 66 historian Bob “Crocodile” Lile shares stories and jewellery made from Cadillac Ranch spray paint, then it’s a snack-filled shopping spree at Buc-ee’s, with beef jerky, sausage on a stick, beaver nuggets, and a giant cinnamon roll. After a stop at Cadillac Ranch, J heads to The Big Texan, famous for its 72 oz steak challenge, for mountain oysters, fried shrimp, and a ribeye. The Texas leg wraps at the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, the halfway point between Chicago and LA. Proof that some of the best food in America is found at roadside diners, where classic diner food and roadside food are still going strong.
